The images appearing in “Always Dream”, a photobook by Yoshihiko Ueda, were all shot in China between 1990 and 2011, while Ueda worked on several advertising campaigns for an oolong tea made by Japanese beverage giant Suntory. Though the reason for Ueda’s presence in China may have been strictly commercial, the photographs in this book possess a serene beauty. During his travels around the country, to places like Shanghai, Shenyang, Guilin, and Dalian, Ueda connected with local people and artists, local street life and urban landscapes, and nature. Incidental encounters alternate with organised shoots with subjects such as ballet dancers, workers, and models.
